톰 건 - 달팽이를 생각하며(Thom Gunn - Considering the Snail) 1929 - 2004

달팽이가 초록의 밤사이를 헤치며

나아간다, 물기를 머금은 풀은

무겁고, 또 비가 땅의 어두움을

어둡게 한 곳에서, 달팽이가 만든

밝은 길 위로 풀이 만나기 때문이다.

사냥을 할 땐 창백한 뿔을 간신히

 

꿈틀거리며 욕망의 숲 속에서 움직인다.

거기 목적에 흠뻑 젖어

다른 아무것도 모르는 달팽이에게

어떤 힘이 작용하고 있는지

나로서는 말할 수 없다.

달팽이의 맹렬함은 무엇일까? 나중에

내가 통로 위의 풀잎들을 헤쳐서

 

너저분한 것들을 가로지른 가늘고

단속적인 흰 자국들을 보더라도

의도적으로 전진해 나간 

그 느린 열정을 결코 상상하지

못했을 거라는 것, 그게

내가 생각할 수 있는 전부이다.

 

* 톰 건은 그렇게 유명하지 않은 현대 시인이지만, 테드 휴즈와 함께 동물들에서 강한 힘을 포착해낸 점이 흥미롭다.

 

The snail pushes through a green

night, for the grass is heavy

with water and meets over

the bright path he makes, where rain

has darkened the earth's dark. He

moves in a wood of desire,

 

pale antlers barely stirring

as he hunts. I cannot tell

what power is at work, drenched there

with purpose, knowing nothing.

What is a snail's fury? All

I think is that if later

 

I parted the blades above

the tunnel and saw the thin

trail of broken white across

litter, I would never have

imagined the slow passion

to that deliberate progress.
