by 길철현 2017. 2. 12.

***The Godfather (October, 21st)  [95년]

D:Francis Ford Coppola.

Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, John Cazale, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, Al Lettieri, John Vigoda, Al Martino, Morgana King, Alex Rocco.

The 1970's answer to [Gone With the Wind] from Mario Puzo's novel on life and times of Mafia patriarch Don Corleone (Brando) and family. A film of epic proportions, masterfully done, but based on pulp fictin; its classic status derives from enomous popularity and fine filmmaking, not from any inherent greatness. Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Actor(Brando), and Screenplay(Coppola and Puzo).

When Leonard Maltin's said this movie didn't have any inherent greatness, what did he mean? Should I have to agree with him? Or against?

(One of our best actors, Park Joonghoon said that he was really impressed by the performance of Marlone Brando in this movie. I saw two of Brando's movies including this one, and I think he is one hell of an actor. In [The Streetcar Named Desire], he gave a real indelible impression of an animalistic blue collar worker and in this he personfies(구현하다) the boss of Mafia.)

When I first saw this movie, the story line was too complicated to understand, but I thought it a good movie because of its large scale and variety of actors, especially Brando. But after reading the origianl novel and watching again this movie, I came to think that this movie is actually a pulp ficion(whatever that is) just like the novel. We can't learn anything from this movie except some crazy idea of a personal heroism(this may be a hasty conclusion.).

It is very popular and watchable but not first-rate.
