[정리] 지금 우리가 알고 있는 아프리카의 이미지는 "유럽인들의 발명품"이라고 할 수 있는데, 유럽인들은 자신들의 식민화를 정당화하기 위해 유럽인들이 아프리카를 열등하고, 야만적인 사람들이 사는 대륙으로 만들었다는 것이 핵심적인 내용이다. 식민 지배 체제에 대한 정당한 분노를 담고 있지만 필자의 논지는 단순한 편이라고 해야 할 것이다. Curtin[The Image of Africa]이나 Brantlinger가 "Dark Continent"의 개념이 19세기에 만들어진 것이라고 보는데 반해 필자는 유럽이 접촉 초기부터 아프리카를 그런 식으로 봐왔다고 주장한다.

2) 18, 19세기 이전에는 아프리카 내륙 지역에 대해 알려진 것이 별로 없음 -- 유럽과의 접촉 이후 no part of Africa unstirred.

- 17세기 무렵 - 거의 모든 아프리카의 배후지역은 외부 세계와 직간접적인 접촉이 있었음.

- the invention of Africa : the systemic manufacturing of a continent on the basis of the African paradigms of superiority versus inferiority, civilized versus uncivilized, among other epithets.

3) 식민화 과정이 유럽인들에게 받아들여지기 위해서는 먼저 정당화되어야 함.

- in order for the colonial process to appear acceptable to the European mind, it had to be justified. Such a justification could be validated only if the lands to be conquered  and the peoples who inhabited them were expropriated of their own identities and constructed in the western mind as objects of devastation, ignorance and primitivism that needed to be saved by the West.

[아프리카의 야만성을 강조하는 것은 그래도 19세기에 그 정점을 이루지 않았던가?]

[필자의 논리는 다소 단순하다. 식민화를 정당화하기 위해 유럽인들이 아프리카를 열등하고, 야만적인 사람들이 사는 대륙으로 만들었다는 것. 정설이긴 하지만 논조가 단순하다.]

- 계몽주의 시기 역시 식민화나 노예 무역에 기초한 제국주의와 뗄 수 없음.

- 다른 나라 땅에 들어갈 때 그 민족들을 몰아내고, 패퇴시키고, 죽이라는 내용.

- 아리스토텔레스의 [정치학]에 나오는 정복을 종용하는 듯한 내용. 남성 중심주의.

- By ruling the inferior, and by imposing on them the rule of "civilization," the strong are saving the "uncivilized" from extinction and self-destruction.
