신은 시골을 만들었고, 인간은 도회를 건설했다.

닥쳐오기 마련인 삶의 쓰라린 채찍을 유일하게 

견딜 수 있게 해주는 선물들, 그러니까 건강과 미덕이

들판과 숲 가운데 가장 풍부하고

또 가장 적게 위협받는다는 게 무에 그리 놀랄 일인가? 

마차와 의자가마만 타고 다녀서

권태에 물리는 것 외에는 피로를 모르고,

인공물 외에는 정경을 즐길 줄도 모르는

그대, 그러므로, 그대의 본령에 고이 머물러라.

그대는 오직 거기에서만 빛날지니.                   

오직 거기에서만 그대와 같은 마음은 해가 되지 않을지니. 

나무들 울창한 우리의 숲은 낮에는 생각에 잠긴 채

그 그늘 아래로 걸어가는 산객을 위안하고,

저녁이면 새들이 갖가지 음악을 지저귀는 가운데

잠든 나뭇잎 사이로 은은히 미끄러지는 달빛, 

나뭇잎이 원하는 빛은 그뿐이라네.

우리의 부드러운 달빛을 지워버리는

눈부신 등불은 없어도 괜찮아. 그대의 노래는

우리의 좀 더 조화로운 선율을 혼란에 빠뜨려 

놀란 개똥지빠귀는 떠나가고 화난 나이팅게일은 

침묵하지. 그대의 쾌락에는 공공연한 해악이 있어 

그대의 나라를 병들게 하네. 칼로 장식을 하고

화려한 부채를 자랑하는 그대의 행위와 같은 우행이

적들도 결코 할 수 없었으며, 그대가 아니라면 굳건할 

우리 제국의 홍예문을 곧 쓰러질 것만 같은

부서져 파편화된 구조물로 만들고 말았지.

God made the country, and man made the town.

What wonder then that health and virtue, gifts 

That can alone make sweet the bitter draught

 That life holds out to all, should most abound

And least be threaten'd in the fields and groves?

Possess ye, therefore, ye, who, borne about  

 

In chariots and sedans, know no fatigue

 

But that of idleness, and taste no scenes

 

But such as art contrives, possess ye still

 

Your element; there only can ye shine;  10

 

There only mind's like yours can do no harm.

 

Our groves were planted to console at noon

 

The pensive wanderer in their shades. At eve

 

The moonbeam, sliding softly in between

 

The sleeping leaves, is all the light they wish, 

 

Birds warbling all the music. We can spare

 

The splendour of your lamps; they but eclipse

 

Our softer satellite. Your songs confound

 

Our more harmonious notes: the thrush departs 

 

Scar'd, and th' offended nightingale is mute. 

 

There is a public mischief in your mirth;

 

It plagues your country. Folly such as yours,

 

Grac'd with a sword, and worthier of a fan,

 

Has made, which enemies could ne'er have done,

 

Our arch of empire, steadfast but for you,  

A multilated structure, soon to fall.

 

- 윌리엄 쿠퍼(1731 -1800)는 18세기의 중소 시인으로, 그의 다음 세대 낭만주의 시인들, 블레이크, 워즈워스, 콜리지 등이 그의 시에 친근감을 느꼈다. 첫 행의 유명세에도 불구하고 이 시는 국내에 번역된 적이 없는 듯하다. 가독성을 위해 약간의 의역이 있었음을 밝혀둔다.
